Worbla’s Black Art is a companion product to Worbla’s Finest Art, the first thermoplastic in the Worbla Art line.
This black thermoplastic material has a smoother texture than Worbla’s Finest Art, with less adhesive and slightly less stretch. With a texture much like clay, fruit leather, or beeswax when heated, it takes fine details and fine filigree work well, becoming rigid and stable when cool. It is a somewhat more forgiving surface than Finest Art for editing work in progress.
Worbla’s Black Art can be built up in layers, shaped over forms of foam, foil, wire or similar armatures, and can be used as a single layer. It can be painted with virtually any paint, wax, or finish, and is often used for projects that require a more metallic finish, as its smoother surface requires less priming before metallic paint can be applied. Non-toxic, skin-safe, and able to be shaped by hand without requiring special safety equipment, Worbla’s Black Art takes complex curves without requiring a vacuform, and is self-adhesive when activated — meaning that glues are not required to join pieces. Hot air, water, or steam can be used to shape the plastic into any shape. It activates at 195°F (90°C), and has a working period of minutes, depending upon the thickness of the piece and the ambient room temperature.
Worbla’s Black Art can be heated endlessly and has no shelf life. There’s no waste because scraps can be conditioned and 100% reblended, and leftovers can be molded to perform like putty. It is a favorite for cosplay and classroom use because of its quick, easy learning curve. Many artists also use Worbla’s Black Art instead of clay to create pieces that are virtually indestructible.
